Winfield Man Says “Wow!” to Unexpected $20,000 Win

TOPEKA, KAN. – “Wow!” That was how Marty Moore, 46, of Winfield reacted at Lottery headquarters this week when he received unexpected good news.

“My wife and I waited until she could get off work to come to Topeka to claim the $2,000 prize I thought I had won on a Bonus Crossword ticket,” Moore explained. “After checking the ticket, the Lottery said I was wrong. They told me I hadn’t won $2,000 – instead, I’d won $20,000!”

Moore had miscounted the number of words he had uncovered on his $2 Bonus Crossword ticket. He thought he had nine words, but he actually had ten, winning him a top prize on the Lottery’s most popular instant scratch ticket.

“I play Bonus Crossword almost exclusively, and I usually buy ten tickets at a time,” said Moore. “We used to go to the casinos in Oklahoma, but we decided we had a better chance of winning a big prize playing Kansas Lottery scratch tickets, so now we stay home and play Bonus Crosswords.”

Moore bought his winning ticket at Felts One Stop 4, located at 221 E. 9th Ave. in Winfield. The store has apparently been lucky for him. He says he won $500 on a scratch ticket he purchased there a couple of months ago.

Moore and his wife Kim have been married for seven years and have four daughters between them. They plan to use their prize money to pay down their home mortgage.
