Husband Listens to Wife – Buys $5,000 Winner

TOPEKA, KAN. – Teresa and John Kahler of Chanute are married with four children between them. Teresa describes what could be one of the keys to a happy marriage.

“We usually listen to each other,” she said.

It’s a good thing John listened to Teresa yesterday when she asked him to pick her up a lottery scratch ticket.

“He was going out to get coffee and said he was thinking about picking up a scratch ticket,” Teresa said. “So I asked him if he would get me one, too.”

John came back with two $5 Super Red Hot Crossword tickets. He kept one for himself and gave the other to Teresa.

“And I’m the one who got lucky,” Teresa said with a smile.

She sure did. The 45-year-old Wal-Mart employee uncovered two black words and four red words on her ticket, winning her a $5,000 cash prize.

“We checked the letters about five times,” Teresa said. “We were afraid to have the store check it, for fear we were wrong, but we finally got up the courage to go down there and find out for sure. We were so relieved when the clerk said, ‘Congratulations!’ because then we knew we had really won.”

The lucky ticket was purchased at Casey’s General Store 1670, located at 220 W. Cherry in Chanute. The Kahlers say they plan to save some of their prize money and spend some on home improvements.
