Victoria Resident Washes Up $20,000 Win

TOPEKA, KAN. – Steve Unrein of Victoria spent his Labor Day like many people - running errands and spending time with his 6-year-old grandson. But unlike a lot of people, he also won a $20,000 top prize playing a $2 Bonus Crossword instant scratch ticket while doing laundry at a local laundromat!

“My grandson and I stopped at a convenience store before we went to do laundry,” said Unrein. “I bought two $2 Bonus Crossword tickets, so I’d have something to do while we were waiting for my laundry to dry. I never expected to win $20,000 at the laundromat!”

According to Unrein when he realized he had a $20,000 winning ticket, he immediately called his son Jeff to share the news.

“When I called my son, he told me to settle down and reminded me that I’d thought I won before but hadn’t,” said Unrein. “We decided it was best that I have the ticket checked, so I went back to the store where they confirmed my win. I started shaking. I was so nervous having that winning ticket in my wallet that I kept looking at it every five minutes. I had a hard time eating, too.”

Unrein, who won $500 playing the same game a few weeks ago, plans to sponsor his son’s race car with his winnings.

The winning ticket was purchased at CX Express, located at 335 W. 8th St. in Hays.
