Wichita Man One Number Away from Winning Mega Millions Jackpot

Joe Rhodes is thrilled that he won $10,000 playing Mega Millions, but he can't help thinking about what might have been.

"If we would have had one more number, we could have retired!" said the 60-year-old Wichita winner.

Rhodes won his $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Megaball in the February 23 Mega Millions drawing.  At that time, the jackpot was estimated at $204 million.  The Mega Millions jackpot kept rolling and is now estimated at $377 million (annuity) for tomorrow night.

He said he had forgotten to check his Mega Millions ticket after the February 23 drawing.  "At least I hadn't forgotten to buy the ticket," Rhodes added. "I've been known to do that, too!"

Rhodes and his wife Theresa have been married nearly 37 years. He works for Communication Technology Associates in Wichita. Theresa works in accounts payable for Sedgwick County. They met while both were in the Air Force in Biloxi, Mississippi. They now have three grown children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Rhodes said they plan to spend some of the prize money on new gutters for their house.

"I've always wanted to take a train trip somewhere, so maybe we'll do that, too" said Rhodes.

Rhodes purchased his lucky Quick Pick ticket at QuikTrip 360R, located at 3933 West 13th Street in Wichita.
