It has not been the easiest time lately for Myles Arndt, Sr. of Emporia. With bad news lurking around every corner, it was a much welcomed moment of joy when he realized he won a $20,000 prize on a $2 Double Bonus Crossword ticket.
“It is absolutely a godsend for us,” Arndt said. “It really could not have come at a better time. It hasn’t even sunk in fully yet, but it truly is such a blessing.”
Recently, Arndt has been dealing with multiple family tragedies. His wife if currently battling brain cancer, despite going through treatments twice already in her life. Then, very recently, Arndt had a sibling pass away as well.
“Lottery tickets are a way that I find some escape during the day,” Arndt added. “I like the crossword tickets because you can really take your time playing. I buy a handful at a time, and then keep them at home for later.”
It was another sleepless night for Arndt when he decided to get up and do something else besides lay in bed. He got into the kitchen and remembered he still had some crossword tickets left, so he sat down and started scratching.
“When I got done, I thought I had won $2,000, which was awesome,” Arndt said with a laugh. “After I checked multiple times, I realized that I had missed an “N” on the board, which actually made 10 complete words. Which was $20,000! I just kind of sat there in shock.”
Arndt says that he still hasn’t really thought about what to do with the winnings yet, aside from taking care of some debt.
“I think we’d like to put some in savings if we can, but obviously we do have some medical bills right now,” Arndt said. “It’s a good problem to have, figuring out what to do with a big prize!”
The winning ticket was sold at Casey’s General Store 1404 at 126 South Commercial Street in Emporia. There are still 23 top prizes left in the $2 Double Bonus Crossword game, as well as thousands in other cash prizes.
